Disease Trials

Areas of creeping bentgrass greens and fairways are managed to promote disease including brown patch, anthracnose, and dollar spot specifically for evaluation of plant protectants.  Additional turfgrass species are maintained for evaluation of other diseases such as summer patch, red thread, and rust.

All research and maintenance at SETRC are overseen by Dr. Mike Harrell, who serves as the single point of contact for all customers.  A small staff work to provide thorough and timely results for customer projects.

Over 4,000 turf plots are under evaluation for genetic improvement each year.  Trials are conducted in cooperation with leading global grass seed research and marketing corporations.  Traits under evaluation include disease resistance, traffic and drought tolerance, and overall quality.

Fourteen species of warm and cool-season turfgrass are maintained exclusively for herbicide tolerance testing.  SETRC also offers various weed populations of economic importance that are managed on-site for herbicide efficacy screening.

Soil fertility is carefully managed at the center to allow for plant nutrition studies.  Soil tests are conducted on a regular basis and then mapped in order to determine the most suitable locations for specific trials.

Arrangements with local growers provide access to a wide variety of container plants for plant fertility and plant protectant studies.  The center features a greenhouse and container nursery area to replicate commercial growing conditions.

Because no research trial is ever the same, SETRC offers customized protocols to meet individual needs.
